What exactly is a blog?

How is it different than any other website?

I keep seeing blog site in search results, and have seen many posts about blogs on this site. I'm still confused as to what a blog is and what's it's purpose?
I already know it's a combination of the words "Web" and "log", but can anyone please explain them?

>different

Search on 'trackback' and/or 'comment spam' for a fast-track explanation of how they differ from independently written pages. (Think BORG)

Originally "blog" or "weblog" referred to a system which allowed a user to post new or interesting urls s/he had visited for the day, as sort of a diary of their web browsing.

Nowadays, the definition has expanded to encompass any kind of automated web journal system. The traditional format is the newest entry, dated, at the top of the page, older entries listed below, and an archive of earlier posts, all of which could be accessed independently and permanently. But there are numerous variations. Some people post whole essays or photos, blog software is used by organizations or businesses to display announcements or news, and blog software can also be used as a simple content management system.

So, Blogs are not the same as a Message Board like this where people post information?

And couldn't anyone create a blog site(s) and post their own link(s) on it to help their rankings in the search engines, mainly Google? It's just a page of a bunch of links, almost like a directory, right?

Correct.

It would only help if that site had a high PR, if yiou were eluding to page rank. If just for discovery of a new site so it gets spidered, then yes if the main site is getting spidered. Is it worth time and effort, your call. I would for the latter reson submit my new site to allready established directories, less work.

Just my .02,
