The syntax, filetype: will work with AtW.

filetype: pdf (Limiting to only Acrobat material)
filetype: msword (Limiting to only Word documents)
filetype: flash (Limiting to only Flash presentations)

These Limits Can Also Be Combined By Placing the Filetype Limits Inside Parentheses (filetype:msword filetype:pdf)

I believe that came online when they did the new skin system and added file types quite awhile ago. I remember reading it here.

It would make more sense if they used filetype:doc and filetype:swf instead of msword and flash, respectively.

Now that Google and AlltheWeb support filetype:, and they and Teoma support site: there seems to be increasing standardization amoung the engines' syntax. Or I guess you could say they're just copying Google, but either way it will make it easier for novices.
