Fast and Lycos

Well, it sure appears Lycos is going to full time Fast Alltheweb.com results. (thanks for the heads up Seth)

They are still presenting the top 5 hits from Direct Hit/Inktomi (ala Hotbot), but the next 10 under the divider are perfect item for item match with AllTheWeb. I hadn't noticed it too much, but with yesterdays update, I find have have a few dozen top five rankings on Lycos now - this a major boost in traffic. Lycos almost out did Altavista today on several domains.

Fast is spidering FAST. We submitted some new domains Saturday - 2 days ago and we were in the index this morning already (wow! The old Infoseek style! 36hours from submission to live).

It appears they are giving a good boost to NEW domains, so now would be the time to submit those extra domains you've forgot about.

You can find if your domain has been indexed by just using www.domain.com (no http: needed). That is the only way I know. I just talked on the phone with a night admin over there and asked him if there was a way to find your domain and/or links. He said they didn't have one currently, but there was a solutions in the works.

I also asked them if there was going to be a press release on Lycos using their results: "...that is all strickly in the test phase for 30 to 60 days and if Lycos like us, then there should be an annoucement". Since Lycos holds a stake in Fast, I can't see them NOT using Fast forever. Especially now that Lycos has proposed merging with Terra since Fast knows the Euro market better than Lycos itself.

Good point. And, if you need someone to round out a search return, I expect Fast is a whole lot cheaper than INK.

Brett, you've mentioned that it wouldn't surprise you if LookSmart started using Fast. LookSmart also is working Euro deals. You playing a hunch? Or, have you heard something?

Looksmart is using Fasts' software for their directory search. There is a working relationship between the two. Rumor has it, Looksmart is not happy with Altavista and approached Ink and Excite about producing results at the same time they picked Fasts search software.

Looks like Looksmart had decided to go it alone. I really thought they would switch to Fast results.

Slightly off topic but....

I seem to be showing quite different results from alltheweb proper vs. lycos. Both are similar in some searches but in others they are not. Any reasons or explanations for this? I could give specific examples, but would prefer to hear from other memebers as to what their status is on the different searches. Thanks.

In one category I've got #3, #7 and #20 at allthesites (the 20 was 10 a few hours ago), the same at Lycos (the 20 is brand new, just added).

The first two are # 23 and #24 at alltheweb, but that category, on all three, is loaded with dozens of those spam pages that were infesting that category on the Ink sites that finally got removed by canada.com I reported it to allthesites this morning.

I'm seeing pages get in very quickly, and have also noticed way different results between alltheweb and Lycos - sites are lower.

I know I am new at all this but it seems to me from all my lycos H*LL that Lycos although using Fast.no... still is not AS FAST as their supplier in updating their database... The Fast crawler indexes almost all URLS the first time you submit them within a few days or at most a few weeks. Incredible :)

I just checked another keyword (a new site) and on this one, the results are almost identical on the two - which is not generally the case at all. Generally, rankings have been far higher on Lycos than alltheweb.
