Lycos Search 6.0 offers users access to more than 2 billion full-text Web documents, and its catalog is updated every nine days, the company said.

>2+ Bill docs
Well Lycos can't help it - they just get those 2+ Bill docs delivered from FAST ;)
see
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum6/950.htm [webmasterworld.com]

The intersting part is that Lycos goes for the news section, with fresh content often only minutes old, from over 3000 sources, as shown at ATW.

Sorry for probably posting to the wrong forum. I checked the "The Search Engine World" section on WebmasterWorld's home page but couldn't find Lycos in the list ("Fast Alltheweb.com" is listed but I didn't know Lycos is connected to Fast), so I decided to post to "Alternative Search Engines". But somehow this didn't seem the right place either...

Can't help but thinking Lycos felt it had to launch this now - the day before another huge portal prides itself with the worlds largest and freshest index plus unmatched newssearch...

I just took a very quick look at Lycos, specifically the news search. It's a bit confusing as it appears that Lycos has 2 news search tools.

Tool number one is accessed via the News button on the left side of Lycos.Com page. A search of this news database for the phrase "Chicago Cubs" retrieves one set of results.
lycos search [news.lycos.com]

Another set of news results is accessed by doing a Lycos search and then clicking on the News tab.

It's the latter, rubble88.
Compare with the news search at ATW. They do some filtering, not exactly sure for what. I think they do not include the "various local news" section at ATW.

Lycos had followed Google with a new News only engine option.

They are also said to claim more frequent "1 minute (!) indexing"

It's FAST's news search, up and running at AlltheWeb.com since November 01, much earlier than Google's news search and still much better.

FAST offers it's portal partners all of the advanced search functions and catalogs showcased at ATW - good to see that at least Lycos.com offers the user those options.

So - for all serious news junkies the original at ATW still has one huge advantage: Lycos misses out on the filter for indexing time.
At ATW you can set the news search to
Pages indexed last 2 hours
Pages indexed last 6 hours
Pages indexed last 12 hours
Pages indexed last 24 hours
Pages indexed last 2 days
Pages indexed last week

Of course usually you'll only need the first two...
