Duplicate listings in Fast/ATW SERPs

My home page appears in results 1-3!

Well, this is new... Did a search for my <company name> and Fast/ATW came up
with two identical entries (#1 and #2) for www.mydomain.com/ (the entries
differed only in the reported page size) plus another listing (#3) for
www.mydomain.com/index.html, with yet another different page size.

The "index.html" was likely my fault - I just recently standardized all on-site
links to the home page to simply use "/" and they probably spidered the site
before I uploaded all of the corrected pages. But the first two listings are
both linked to "/" and differ only in the page size... Weird...

Anyone else seeing this?

Thanks,
Jim

5.5 hours later, and this problem has cured itself. So, either I saw
a quick "FastDance", or Stig saw my post and they tweaked something...

Hi,

I was at number 1 and number 18 now I've lost my No 1 and am left with a 17, everyone seems to have moved up.

Clearly I'd have been hapier to lose the other one.

Sid,

Well, don't give up yet - They still have some work to do... I'm still in their index with some
URLs that have been dead since June.

lazerzubb,

"Stig" posted here awhile ago as a representative of Fast.

Further to my earlier post.

Thinking back to recent events I thought it might be appropriate to share what my brain is dredging up.

First of all our position at number one was in line with other major search engines and directories for our top search words. We are at one, two or three on Yahoo, Google, MSN, Teoma/Ask etc. etc.

Recently we have had a two or three calls from companies claiming to represent Lycos offering enhanced services. The promise is a prominent position in exchange for 500 UK pounds or thereabouts. On one of these calls I said why would we want that we are at number one anyway. To which the girl said oh no you are at number 18. I checked while she was on the phone and confirmed to her that we were at both number one and number 18. It was after this call that we lost our number one slot.

So what is going on Lycos? Do I have to pay £500 to get back to where I was?

Hissingsid, I very much doubt that Lycos would contact Fast and have them remove your site from the #1 spot. It sounds a little too troublesome to manually remove a site just because you didn't buy that product.

The product you mention - enhanced services - for around £500. Could that be their Surftip (includes some extra features like grafic buttons etc.)?
[secure.lycos.de...]

As to why you are no longer in the top spot? Well, it could just be Fast tweaking their algo or updating the index. A little hard to tell without seeing the SERP. Have you seen other sites move too recently?

Did the ranking come from the directory or from Fast?

Hi Rumbas,

I know I'm just getting paranoid in my old age.

From memory it just looks like our site has been taken from number one and all of the rest, including our second listing at number 18 have been moved up one place.

There are only three sites in our category in the directory and we only got a good ranking after I did the paid for spidering index submission, so I guess it is from Fast.

Fortunately we pay for clicks with Overture UK so can be at number one on Lycos UK that way.

If you search for caravan insurance you will see us at number 17.

Best wishes

Phil

Woops! spoke to soon, back down to 15.

I wish I could work out what is making my site rank change so dramatically when my competitors are staying the same and I'm not changing anything.
