Well, if no one is going to yak with me in this sub-board, I guess I'll kill it.

Nobody wants to chat about Fast?

I never gave Fast much consideration until I read your posts here but have been using it more and more these days and have to agree it is a very speedy and effective search tool. As so many of the other search engines seem to be burying the little guys and catering to the big companies with deep pockets with regards to rankings this SE might become a refuge for the rest of the web if they stick to their theme of indexing "All Of The Web". I personally like to explore the small trails and back alleys of the web to find information that the big guys might stop carrying because someone didn't grease their palms and I'm betting alot of other surfers feel the same way.

No, I would love to talk about FAST. In an earlier post to you a few wks ago, you advised that you thought their criteria was pretty standard. So, for my primary KW, I own positions 172-179 there, I thought I should just wait it out (same site, same pages number 11 in AV).

I would love to know what they have done in the past several days. Oddly, FAST is my first choice for my own searching and I started noticing about 3 days ago, when clicking on some results, the following message is returned:

"The page you are looking for has moved

We have reorganized the content on our web server. The page you are looking for has moved to a new location. Please use the links on our front page to find what you are looking for. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Click here to go to the front page of alltheweb.com"

Clicking there removes your search and delivers you back to the initial alltheweb.com screen. You can type in the url of the result and get there, meaning, FAST is not finding 404s for you and doing you a favor. I took it to mean they were re-orging and going to employ a new algo and this was the part of the digestion process. Then, last night, the fastcrawler visited me and went nuts. Chewed my site up! Again, Little Miss Number 172 thought -- great -- they are on the move.

Precious little at SEF on this topic. At SEW, most current info on FAST is from May 1999.

I haven't seen any advertising, don't know what their intentions are. I've been doing a wait-and-see on FAST.

Don't kill it Brett. I reckon, in the world of SEs, Fast is the web's best known secret, apart from Northern Light. NL has consitently provide me with a superb search tool. I beleive Fast is shaping up. Watch out for Fast.

Yeah Brett - don't kill it. FAST only recently got my attention and I am on a tear to learn more.

No, don't kill Fast - it *is* fast - and very accurate. I have an old site that for 5 different key phrases has the site at 4 & 8, 1, 1-3, 1, 5. Newer sites are indexed but I can't find them on a KW search. I would like to know why!

Fast is a top 3 traffic provider for the most important site that we have optimised. But then, fast has indexed 3875 pages out of 4200 which is great. Our pages feature in their results for almost all our key terms. No complaints here regarding Fast except that they havent included some of my newer sites in their index yet. Anyone got an idea of how often they update?

Hehe. nuke it. Well since you put it that way, I'll keep it!

Seriously, I just compared Fast and Alta for quality of search results, and they are getting pretty close. Fast is still a bit spammy, but they have come light years in the last few months.

Since you are keeping it, let's try data collection. I have been at #172 since 4/21. Same positions for several pages since then.

From not being listed to 11 top 10 positions for various terms and 2 orders and getting hits from allthesites AND getting high rankings in Lycos US - all in 24 hours - I've fallen in love with Alltheweb already! Along with great results from Google - it's been a good week so far (says he - tempting fate)!!

I don't get it. If Lycos is now using Fast, why has T-Rex hit my site 3 times in the last 3 days? Why would they bother, unless maybe somethiing is about to change?

>why has T-Rex hit my site 3 times

Lycos has many regional versions, the bulk of which are not currently using Fast's results.

Littleman also made some interesting observations here [webmasterworld.com].

>unless maybe somethiing is about to change?

I don't really see any change in the pattern following the Fast deal, it may be that lycos are trying to cover their options in case the Fast deal doesn't work out.

I still submit to both and until T-Rex stops visiting will continue to do so.
