Who are those 90% of unaccounted clicks?

I don't want to display my ignorance, but, well, this is the place to ask.

Our stats show information on only about 10% of visitors to our site.

The rest are shown as unknown or "typed URL in directly". There's no chance so many people would do that.

We host shared at Verio under Win2000, but have used other web counters in the past, and the result was always the same.

Why are so many visitors "missing" and is there anything we can do to find them?

Which is a very good guide. The bottom line is that nobody really knows, but you can try to make some sort of estimate if you make certain ingoing assumptions.

Without those assumptions, all you can really tell is trends between one period and the next, and the relative importance of different referrers.
