More sites than visits in Webalizer

The Webalizer statistics for my site show that 2354 “sites” (different IP addresses) made only 800 visits!

Since "Visits only occur on PageType requests", I assume that at least 1554 unique IP addresses must have made requests to the server that did not include a Page Type request. Is this possible? Anyone know what it might mean?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Nigel [webmasterworld.com].

That doesn't make sense but then I don't regularly use Webalizer. Perhaps there's a configuration setting on your server's install of Webalizer that could explain that.

Or perhaps someone else might chime in.

Good luck,

I believe there are some problems with webalizer. In the list of entry-pages, the first entry consistently has more visits than hits, which obviously doesn't make sense.

I haven't found the time to report it. Maybe I should.

I'm responding to your initial question which was:

" ... at least 1554 unique IP addresses must have made requests to the server that did not include a Page Type request. Is this possible?"

Yes this is possible.

You should check to see which files Webalizer classes as pages. It may be that these 1554 unique IP addresses have requested only files that are not pages. I'm not familiar with Webalizer but these are likely to be images, perhaps frames or style sheets etc.

If you want to look at this a little more deeply, see if you can get Webalizer to list these 1554 IPs for you. You can then go through the log manually to see which files they have requested.

That should clear things up for you.

I'm almost certain that the higher number will include requests for image urls.
