Reverse IP lookup and domain info

Sometimes I need to know which ISP a particular IP address belongs to and I need information about this ISP (i.e. what IP number blocks are allocated, where it resides etc.).

Also, in my access logs in most of the cases the raw IP numbers aren't shown anymore, i.e. there are things like "p1439-apx1.syd.ihug.com.au" - just to make an example.

I've been using the amnesi site, but it is very often down. Does anybody know of another site which provides this information?

If you do a search for free IP look up, you can download a free tool that will give info on the IP address, who owns the block and who to contact. I use it all the time, its brill :)

Looks like it doesn't exist at the moment. My assumption when I see these in my logs is that some ISPs must add and remove DNS info when the modems are put into and out of use by subscribers. It's just a guess, though, and a guess that has the notable problem that if I were going to the trouble of changing DNS info every time a subscriber connected and disconnected, the names would probably look something like username.point-of-presence.myisp.tld - much more informative than I see on these.
