I am currently updating my filter for banned countries.

So far I definitely bann the follwing ipaddresses:

- nigeria NG
- ghana GH
- cote`divoire CI
- ukraine ua

I am not sure about the follwing ones:

- LY, AZ, VN, OK, LB, MA, KU, JO, AM, AC, IL

I think Israel, Libya, Marocco etc are harmless, but I am not sure.

Has anyone any bad experiences with ip addreses from some other countries, like the top spammer countries above?

Thanks!

I RUN a self made SQL/Coldfusion Script that finds differences between MaxMiND vs IPTOLOCATION, and then investigate the abnormalities, and adjust to the issues as I go(it’s a DBA thing)

This looks like a good system, but have to agree with the above poster, how can we ensure that we are not also blocking Googlebot, Yahoo Slurp or MSNBot ? ?

Anyone know the countries that these 3 bots come from ?

I meant earlier poster, not the one above.

Has anyone found a way to edit the posts, like you can on other forums ?

Google, MSN, and Yahoo are could buy infrastructure around the globe, enabling them to deploy their bots from anywhere. So you could very well be blocking their bots when applying certain country IP filters. Arguably, if you notice a drop in crawling, you can adjust by letting some of the traffic back in. It's up to you whether or not you want to be involved in this type of activity. But you should not go into this thinking that it will be simple to determine the actual origin of traffic based on its IP address.

As an aside, with IPv6 coming, it will be even more difficult, especially when tunnels and proxies are involved.

Many thanks gregbo - it's appreciated.

It's just that about 2-4Gb a week is wasted when people from certain countries are viewing the websites.

Any other ideas ?
