206 error - partial content

what's the problem?

Hey all -

I've got awstats and I've noticed the stat at the bottom where it says error codes:

206 - partial content - 1.46gb

This is a video clip site and I've noticed when the user right clicks on the video and "save target as", the d/l may stop and declare itself completed...even though it's far from complete. Now why would it do that?

What does it all mean and is there a better method to display videos?

Comments and tips appreciated.

Best,
Z

Hi Zoobie,

the "206" is not an error code but a status code.

Apparently, the client requested just a part of the file, and the webserver did what the client wanted.

Here is the full story:
[w3.org...]
206 Partial Content
The server has fulfilled the partial GET request for the resource.

Regards,
R.

It's a d/l page. I just add those 2 headers for a full request? Looks like 1.46gb of 4gb were partial...Not what I want.
Thx

It registers when someone stpps a d/l...thusly getting a partial...but I'm also having premature stopping of d/l which adds to the stats.

Thx...I think this is server related.

You could always move it to an public FTP area - this is a little more robust for large DL's

well, I'll have to maybe embed or stream if I want something different.

But what's really strange is 1/4 of my visitors are getting partial d/l's, too.

I can't really be asking visitors to install an ftp client just to see videos...

Guess I can ask the host if there's any server issue or limitation as some video files are 15mb.

Thx

There are web-based ftp things one installs on the site and they work within the visitor's browser, I'll be checking some of these out myself.

but I'm also having premature stopping of d/l which adds to the stats.

How are you determining that? Do you have a way of sorting out the dial-up people who are abandoning the dl because it's taking too long, from server derived problems? Could you make two versions of the files available, low-res and hi-res?

I determined this by the amount of partial d/l's and the fact I try to get them myself and the d/l says complete when it's not.

I have several different sizes and they're each clearly marked how large the are.

I'll be checking out the browser-based ftp, too, if not too much is involved.

Thx
