Related to tracking and logging: surveys?

Anyone put up a survey to find out more about visitors?

I've seen very brief surveys on various news sites I visit and thought they were pretty neat and unobtrusive and was wondering if anyone has tried having a survey on their site to find out more about their visitors (in able to, for example, serve better-targeted ads). I'm thinking it wouldn't have to be intersitial like some I've seen (to avoid annoying your visitors).

Anyone try this? Experiences?

I know lots of people do this, but to be honest, maybe more should.

As long as it doesn't annoy anyone too much and it isn't required for them to complete it to continue using the site then it can only be a good thing. Then only people that want to and also that have something to say will fill it out. Custoimer feedback is invaluable.

Have a separate Survey page with nearly a dozen, all related to the content of the site, which have fairly regular traffic. Can't say how good these are for tracking/logging, but do reveal what some visitors are looking for.
