We also figured that Google was planning on announcing something new at PubCon, this looks like it might be it.
woah! this is gonna hurt a lot of analytics providers out there ;-)
Oh yeah. I use Visitorville at the moment after switching from Webtrends. The new Webtrends service sucks, but Visitorville has some unique features that nothing else can match. But I wouldn't like to be in the analytics market at the moment.
I would read the small print very, very carefully with the Google analytics though.
Personal Use OnlyThe Google Services are made available for your personal, non-commercial use only. You may not use the Google Services to sell a product or service, or to increase traffic to your Web site for commercial reasons, such as advertising sales. You may not take the results from a Google search and reformat and display them, or mirror the Google home page or results pages on your Web site. You may not "meta-search" Google. If you want to make commercial use of the Google Services, you must enter into an agreement with Google to do so in advance. Please contact us for more information.
Of course, this pretty much prohibits the use of the analytics at all. It's a standard part of the T&Cs which doesn't fit with this product at all.
The other T&Cs don't seem relevant - it's all aimed for users of things like Gmail, Orkut, the Toolbar etc. Nowhere does it say exactly what Google will do with the collected data.
Can you believe Google is offering this for FREE - Urchin was $199 per month and Analytics is supposed to be even better with a tighter Adwords integration.
What's Google upto?
We're currently running Urchin so if this turns out to be worthwhile it could save us a chunk of cash.

The instructions say to place the Javascript in the <head> section of each page. But for me that would mean editing a LOT of pages.
I'd much rather put it in an include which does the page footers.
Any reason why that wouldn't work? Only thing I can think of is that pages which are only partially loaded won't get counted. Is there some other reason that tracking javascript needs to go in the <head> section?
from Analytics help
"After you first install the tracking code, it may take several hours for report data to appear in your account. Google Analytics generally updates your reports every hour, but data can take up to 6 hours to appear in your account."
and
"Report data is generally updated once an hour, but data may sometimes take up to six hours to appear in your account. AdWords cost information is imported once daily, to import the previous day's information."
Cheers
Plus, if you were currently spending $200 a month on traffic analysis, now you have that money free to buy more AdWords to increase the traffic to your site.
And, they can more accurately monitor which sites are most popular for keywords based on traffic and not just search engine searches/clicks. If you can track a user across 3-4 sites for one keyword, and compare the amount of time that user spends on those sites, how valuable is that to Google? Certainly more valuable then the $200/month they were charging for the Urchin software prior...
Chip-
as you said, they could track users round a number of sites on the same keyword and from time spent on the site use this as a ranking factor for the serps.
They get some similar info from the toolbar already but this is user but not site tracking.
I can't really see how it can be a BAD thing. if they use the data to try and squeeze every penny out of you, they are shooting themselves in the foot. If the results get bad, they loose users therefore loss of revenue. not a good thing for anyone..
I see an error message in the Analystics set up page, where the web sites to be tracked are listed. The message says:
"Tracking has not been validated or added to one or more of your Website Profiles
Report data is not being gathered for one or more of your Website Profiles. Please review the Status column in the table below to discover which Website Profiles require action in order to add tracking for gathering report data."
In the status column of the web site it says "Waiting for Data" and on the next line "Conversion Goals (0)" with a yellow (!) next to it.
No data showing after almost 24 hours.
Does that mean that I _have_ to enter goals? The help is not really helpful at all
