AWStats flakey?

Getting widely varying results

For the past few months, traffic to my site has been steady at 4,000 to maybe 4,800 visitors a day.

On Monday AWStats showed 5,600 visitors, and then about 5,200 on Tuesday. Then the number of visitors reported dropped back down into that 4,400 to 4,800 range.

Can/does AWStats sometimes overcount visitors? I've never seen this before.

check your page views and see if that varied also, because that number is less influenced by stats' programs algorithms.

Then check your referrers and look for ones suddenly producing a lot of traffic. Somebody could have featured your site for a day or two. Also look at your report on IP addresses.

AWStats doesn't miscount randomly (it miscounts systematically and consistently; they all do!). There's an explanation for this.
