Linking referrer to file access

I see comments all around in reference to tracking down hotlinking that say "check your logs" to see who is referring.

How the heck does one actually do that in say, webalizer or Awstats? I realize that I could comb through access_log but is that information conglomerated somewhere?

What you are looking for is people who link to collateral files on your site without viewing the content the collateral is hosted within - for example an image that appears on someone else's site but is downloaded from yours.

Your web stats program should be able to identify these referrals to your site that do not go thorough 'normal' means - referred from other resources on your site.

Yes. This is what I have heard countless individuals say. However, I am having difficulty finding out *how* to do this in my stats.
