trackback vs google

Isn't it possible to use google to find what websites link to your particular URL (backlinks)?

So why not just do that on a blog -- for every post, I just have my server run a quick google query to find pages linked to that post's URL, and display a list of them at the end of the post?

What does the Trackback protocol give me that google doesn't?
