Search String Based Tracking - Applying Cookies?

Do you know if this is possible? If so, any scripts already out there?

Create a program that would track visitors & where they are coming from & apply the applicable cookie to their computer.

For example, when a user goes to Google & types in merchant accounts, this is the web address or string that they would be coming from, the referring url: [google.com...]

You would then configure it so if they come from that site, which would be a search for merchant accounts, the program would automatically apply a special cookie. Then the script that I have already setup that pulls the cookies off their computer, will pull that one off their computer and let me know what it is.

Currently, if someone is coming from the search engines, I don't know what keywords they used so I really can't be efficient in trying to get better ranking on certain keywords that seems to bring in the best results, etc. You can do the tracking with Google if you use their PPC program, but I need something for the free searches as we don't pay for that.

Thanks
Curtis

Curtis,

Have you looked at your server logs? If they don't record the referrer, then you're missing important information.
