How do I retrieve data from an archived logfile?

What application do I need to use and how?!

Had a few problems with my hosting company recently and Awstats. A few days ago our stats did not update and got this message - "Logrotate most likely archived the logfile before Awstats parsed the data from it." Also got told that I can "download the archived logfile (web.log.1.gz) and use a Windows/MAC based application to retrieve all data contained in that log if you need to". Great. Do I have a clue what to do?!
Could anyone advise me, or let me know how I could go about doing this please! Any help would be greatly appreciated as at the moment I have no idea where to start! Thanks!

Your "archived logfile" is basically compressed in a gz format. There are a number of tools out there that will allow you to "uncompress" the file back into the raw text information.

Many tools require the file to be in that raw text format.
