Dear all

How can i convert and IP to an actual person....i use certain utilities which usually tell me whois the provider and they stop there. The kind of thing of reporting abuse etc. I want to go a step further and see who is actully looking at our website and use it for marketing purposes. thank you in advance

Do you want their social security number and credit rating, or just their name, address and phone number?

Please excuse my ignorance, but isn't converting IP to actual user name a complete & total impossibility? Unless, of course, you have transaction data?

You can look up the whois data to find out to whom the IP address is registered: [iana.org...]

To go beyond that, you'd probably have to contact the registrant and see if they'll tell you anything.

Thank you for your time...i have reached that stage my self :-)...there are loads of sites you can do that. After that you have to follow the route you suggested.

You can't trace the IP back further than the registered block. Actually performing a lookup on the connection to see to which dialup it is assigned to is something that only the ISP can do (and indeed, cannot do in some countries unless under court order!).

The trail turns cold...
