I have a site that typically has few hits (log files under 50k). I haven't put much effort into it yet and have not publicized it. Starting a few days ago, it started getting a large number of hits on a sustained basis. The log files jumped to around 4meg in size.

When I check the logfiles, there is one referrer that keeps showing up. When I check the referrer's website, it appears to be some type of link-exchange page. I've never added this site (or any site) to a link exchange. (I'm not sure if it's okay to include the name of the referrer here or not, so I am leaving it out.)

Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on?

Sticky me If you need the referrer's URL and I'll send it to you.

Does your link show up that points to your site on the exchange page.

It may just be log spamming, dropping their url in your logs so you visit their site. Seems it worked ;)

Yes - my URL shows up on their list.

Should I block requests from this site somehow? I don't really care about the traffic (as long as it doesn't continue to increase). The site is borrowing space on a server that can handle the traffic.

My off-topic question: Why are there so many jerks in the world that are willing to spend such amounts of effort to make money by deception and fraud when an honest living can be had for the same amount of work?

- cheers

Because they're not smart enough to realize that.
