I tried to post this last night, but it messed up somehow...
I've been getting visits from "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;)". Is this a valid UA, like "Mozilla/3.01 (compatible;)" or is this someone (robot?) with a spoofed UA?

A legitimate user could have some "security/privacy" software which strips out the other information in the UA string (or just replaces it all), but leaves enough to ensure compatibility with most web servers. So, you can't assume there is anything bad about the agent. It's pretty common, and getting more common.

It can also be proxy server software.
Mozilla/3.0 (compatible;) Mozilla/3.01 (compatible;) Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;) are fine as long as they contain ";"
