Visitor Keywords

My website host provides web logs that i found great in the first couple of weeks, however I now crave more information than the logs are providing.

I downloaded a few website log analyzers to see if I could use the current logs to provide more information. You guessed it, just the same info as before!

From reading the posts on this board the general feeling seems to be that your best bet is to build your own logs. I have no experience of doing this and I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good tutorial on building your own logs (for a beginner).

I also get the impression that it could take months to complete my own log system, so in the meantime is their any free scripts out there that I could use to track the keywords that the visitor used to find my site?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

having a good logging system in place is sometimes invaluable, but you shouldn't overdo it.
After starting to analyze my logfiles with analog 4 years ago, I only implemented minimal custom logging solutions for certain events that take place on my site. Eg newsletter subscriptions and clicks to a certain affiliate merchant, that doesn't have a good logging system.

You can drown in data. I find it fascinating to analyze my sites, but it sometimes keeps me from developing and marketing them

I'd follow this forum [webmasterworld.com ] for a while and see if you can find some better options for analyzing those logs.
