Tracking PPC's the novice solution

Because I am a novice

Hi,

I currently use Overture and Google Adwords for PPC advertising. My site is a simple site using just standard html. The site sells just one product, let's say a 'widget' and I use WorldPay to process the payments.

Everything is working fine and I have found that after setting up the PPC with Overture and Google, that sales have increased. However, before I spend anymore I would like to know how successful particular campaigns are. I really should have done this first, but I have no idea how to.

I haven't setup any tracking URL's but after seeing the overture site, it seems pretty simple and I'm sure I can do this. But I never saw the point in just having these tracking URL's, because they don't tell you if that click resulted in a sale. I know how many clicks a certain keyword gets because Overture tell me that anyway. What I want is to calculate ROI.

From reading through this site I have come to the conclusion that cookies seem to be a good way. How do I write a cookie for just getting the referrer and the IP address of the visitor?

WorldPay gives the IP address of the customer so I have no problem going and searching this IP address to the relevant referer and search term. Due to the small no. of customer's I don't need a fancy dan system which does it for me. I am quite happy to do it myself manually. But how?

I just need help with how to make cookies, and how the information is saved and where it is saved too. I realise that cookies reside on the customers PC, but how do I get to see the details.

As you can tell, I am a novice. It would be great for some help of a point in the right direction.

Cheers

Tim

Tim,

rather than the Overture tip, what you really need is an ROI tracking solution.

Some of the big players offer this at big money, however there are a number of scripts available on the open market.

1 that I know costs $20 a month. another 1 is $24,95 for outright purchase.

these can show you referrer, keyword, conversion rate etc etc, and really help you in your PPC spend.

try searching on Google for "roi tracker"

good luck, and let us know how you get on.
