It sort of reminds me of what happened to Infoseek.
I bet this is just the first phase too, it feel like it is in transition.

It'll be them instead of SBC/Prodigy, who hijack you (hardcoded) to their homepage which freezes your system every time, is slow as molasses to load, and now spews popups.
This is what I put up with now:

I can imagine what it'll be when Yahoo takes over; they haven't said when. And BTW, they use L$ for search now, so that'll be interesting to see the change to Yahoo.
And the search box, pushing it to the side. MSN tried to lessen the emphasis on their search box, and then they put it back, wider then ever.
Wonder if Yahoo will do the same, if they make the switch and more and more users flock to other sites? (change the search box, I mean, back to the old style if they use this new ugly idea...)
My .02 cents.
Even when I'm search DMOZ, I'll run a keyword search, and then find a likely category in the search results rather than drilling down from the front page.
It definitely looks more commercial, with the large "Yahoo Personals" ad that I see.
Well, I get that gigantic Personals ad on both the Beta and regular version. That's the first thing I'd get rid of, if I were redesigning the page... but their priorities are apparently different than mine.
IMO, Yahoo is going down the tubes as anything but a shopping portal.
This is a watershed month in the history of Yahoo. There are two roads they can take right now: 1) sess up to their knees, or 2) sess up to their necks. I'm thinking they are about to choose #2 with the most fundamental mistake in their history. They don't get they are still regarded by their long term loyal users as a search engine. Screw with that - goodbye users.
If that happens, I think it will be a bad for the entire net. The ripple effect will be subtle at first, but it will be profound and long lasting. So goes yahoo - so goes the net.
This isn't the web of 98, 99, or even 2000. Web patterns of usage are established. When they switched from Alta to Ink - nobody had a clue what happened. When the switched from Ink to Google, everyone cheered because the results were so much better. If they put it in reverse and back away from that, bad things, bad things for us all. You can't go to the mountain and walk back down gently. It will be a cancer that eats at Yahoo for several years.
I have to admit that the signs are not good: if they are about to reduce the quality of their returns it makes sense to marginilize them on the intro page.
The other sign of course may be the recent algo experimentation at Google (see other thread). Possible reduction of the PR boost from a Yahoo directory entry? Now that one IS speculation.
I just have to say "PUKE!"
I understand the reason they design their pages the way they do, and how the tradition got started in the first place. Really though... I think it is time to get with the game. Time for Yahoo to loose the 80's web developers and hire someone who lives in the now.
I stopped going to them year ago, because all the links everywhere and confusion was just too much for me ha ha ha! ;)
I admit, I was excited to see a new look for them, but even the Beta still gives me a migraine.

It's arrived, but after seeing the preview page sent with the big announcement received by email yesterday I have not installed it.
Here is the sneak peek I was sent:
