The directory is maintained by humans, so what are the ways to promote the website for higher rankings for keywords?

You need good content.
It is not sufficient to get more clicks but you need your visitors spend time in your site.
Once your site is listed there's little you can do. Like angiolo said, adding content is a good way to optimize since it'll increase your clickthrough percentage.
