Expect some better positions on SE using link pop soon...
What actually makes them who they are is the fact that they are a well-known brand. Like AOL -- who is not the best at what they do either -- the recognizability of their brand name is conducive to driving the "less internet savvy" crowd which is made of of people like -- yes, you guessed it -- my mother.
And by my own reckoning, people like my mother, while not among those who drive technology, are indeed those who drive the economy.
Who do you think is more likely to open her wallet to pay someone she doesn't know? Me? Or my mother?

plus 1,140,000 references of some sort in Google.
One person named "duhwebmaster" works 26 hours a day developing links for Yahoo!
please tell me how you got listed in yahoo...
Personally, I think it's a mixture of branding, stickiness, and relevance.
