I know I've seen this before, but I cant find it.

We need to try to build one sitemap that will work for Google, Yahoo and MSN. Or at least build one program that will spit out sitemaps for each.

This might work in one of two ways that I can think of:

1. One process that creates and updates sitemaps that will work for Google and Yahoo
OR
2. One process that creates different sitemaps for each Google and Yahoo (something like xml-sitemaps.com maybe?)

Caveats:
1. Must create our own - not use software
2. How to do this for hundreds of thousands of pages for each site (any roadblocks there?)

Where is the info on how to do this?

Yahoo uses a txt file with a filename urllist.txt, Google uses an XML file format.

This is the basics of what I have seen and there may be much much more to it.

You can find online software that will create sitemaps for you in the respective formats. Search on Google for create google sitemap to find some good choices.

Google will take a txt file, the same as Yahoo. The disadvantage is that you can't specify some of the parameters (importance etc) that you can with an XML.

I've started naming the sitemaps for Yahoo. Google can read the same text file.
