Yep. Subdomains with comment/blog spam doing very well. Meanwhile, my 35 page content site with 3 affiliate links was banned a year ago and is no where to be found.

Huh? Waddya mean "a matter of time"... surely they already know. They just can't figure out how to deal with it...

I was just thinking about this 8 hours ago just before I fell asleep. I thought how great it must be to be able to scrape websites, plunk some adsense and make money out of people's content, and just watch your site climb the serps!

I have pleaded so many times asking them to reinstate my site. But because it has an affiliate link it is "inappropriate". With good content, what is so bad about making a few bucks off one or two aff links? People monetize their sites with adsense and YPN, and that seems acceptable. What a double standand.

Meanwhile, subdomains, comment spam, and junk rise to the top. Heck, I keep working on my site even after 5 years (turns 5 next month), because other search engines appreciate it, and the branding it has generates traffic on it's own.

yeah... the #1 site in my category is 90% affiliate links camouflaged by short (probably self-written) summaries. And the guy looks like he's been hard-coded there!

when you click on a link, you're taken to the affiliate website, but the url in the address bar states www.example.com/affiliate-site.html

how does he do it?

Most bloggers don't even realize that there is spam because the spammers hide the links with some tricks. So if you own a blog check your source code!

I disagree. Blogger gives you a free site and some people with interesting and informative content use it. It's the unscrupulous tricksters gaming the SEs that muck it up. Frankly since the SEs know about it and choose to do nothing is neither the fault of the legitimate bloggers or the spammers.
I have concluded Google will do little to thwart the AdSense (BadSense) spammers because ultimately they lead to profitable clicks.
(I might trademark the term "BadSense") :-)

Yes I see this. There is a network of sites targetting a series of big money keywords that are doing great in these serps. When i looked at their backlinks to see why they are doing so well i discovered they have thousand of links from guestbooks and blog comments. It's kind of tempting to think that it's all too easy if that is the direction you want to go in, and hopefully it will just be a matter of time before Yahoo clean all this up, because it is making their serps stink sometimes, not to mantion making it impossible for honest webmasters to get their websites placed with decent rankings.

I have to tell you this is the same in Google....we are in an era where big time spam works like a dream but a little bit of grey hat on joe bloggs website will see him sent to the gallows with no right of appeal...its quite extraordinary!

Well certainly blogging is a problem now a days but it would say 100% resposibility goes to Google, Yahoo & MSN. These are the SE's who start promoting BLOGS on SERPs, which worked for spammers as a new tool for spamming.

One has to accept that around 90% blogs are useless and being used with AdSense or redirecting for making profits.

Its a legal matter of indirectly pushing webmasters for spamming by Search Engines.

Agreed Erku; I've been checking the Y search blog every morning and am always a little disappointed to not see any weather updates. If any Y employees are here, I have a few requests:

1. Fix Slurp; it is wildly out of control, causing you to index obviously garbage URL parameters that we properly return 404 errors on.
2. Devalue big name blogs for your more competitive phrases; you don't have to delete them, but they shouldn't be ranking....seriously.
3. If you knocked any sites out because of the funky indexing, 302 weirdness, or general Y mishap, don't make them wait 6 months until the spam filter lifts.

Apart from the affects on the SERPS the failure of the search engines to penalise blog spam and it's cousin, referer spam, has encouraged the spammers to flood blogs and web logs with their garbage. If Y! and the rest of them stopped rewarding them they would stop doing it because there would be no point, and I for one would be spared several hours work every week in blocking IP addresses from my servers. Blogs are for blogging, they were never meant to be serious, income earning sites so there is no justification for them turning up in the SERPs for anything other than mundane terms.

Look at the number one result. It's a spam. I can't believe what I see.

The buttom line: Yahoo needs an urgent update.

Spam, like the poor, will always be with us IMO. There are millions of determined people all over the world trying to put bread on the table - or bigger diamond rings on their lovers' fingers - and every time the search engines block the latest trick they'll come up with another. We might as well accept this and concentrate on our own long term objectives, whilst feeling a little sorry for the guys at Y! who have to make some sense out of the tons of garbage on the Internet.

The basic problem started when Google and Yahoo introduced new algo, which was merely based on finding a keyword in the content, not to in relevency with site title, description & url.

See this, I cant believe but its fact:

Now if you see its clearly saying "redirected page" it means a trick to cheat SEs but position is still maintained.

This results that there is no co-ordination/syncronization between the version of results listed and the version used for keyword ranking.

We never expect this much of quality from Y! tech peoples.

yes..there was yahoo_mike, tim and yahoosearch (or something like that. Mike i think got into some sticky situations by being too open. Tim, well, he's a pr guy who helped some mods and a few lucky members get their banned sites back into the index in the very early days of the switch. The search guy, im not sure if hes still around. I dont visit this forum too much cause its too depressing when your site is banned :(

I guess im reminiscing over the days when i could talk about where my site was in the serps and the mods didnt jump all over you if you posted from the heart. (no offence mods, you have your remit ;))

You mean I suppose those flying circus guys with 5-6 .co.uk domains all the same template and same affiliate link offering cheap ....flights....seekers....offers....planers...savers
God for some money keywords they are #1 ,2,3,4 and 5 with all those domains ,wonder if Yahoo knows that and how do they survive yet.

it seems to me looking at yahoo and google, that we are lving in the age where the only they can do is clobber the little guy who stuck too many keywords on his content page, or all his tags match too well, so thats what they do. For me this is the age ture spam. Its now a peice of cake to link up your network and get great rankings. Its the easiet its ever been to cheat the engines. Its remarkable that both the big two are so vulnerable to basic link manipulation at the same time.
