Yahoo! Inc. is establishing a New York City research facility and hiring a top scientist from the government agency that developed the Internet.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company opened a fourth research facility in New York City -- its first on the East Coast -- as part of a larger move aimed at creating new products and services to compete with rivals like Microsoft and Google.
