disappearing homepage

hi there

until about a month ago i had a top 10 listing for my homepage for a competitive keyphrase, but then, one day the homepage just disappeared from the serps.

other pages were in the serps but not the homepage any more.- although it was still there if i did a site:domain.co.uk search.

then another page on my site built up to a top 3 ranking for another quite competitive keyphrase. Then today that page has now disappeared from the Serps and.... now the homepage is appearing at number 80 in the serps for this keyphrase!

i must admit it has got me confuses- keep thinking i have been penalized but can't think a) what for and b) what kind of bizarre penalty has been imposed.

anyone else experienced anything similar?

I am also seeing some wild swings in indexed pages. Used to stand at nearly 700. Earlier today at 450, right now at 200. Not sure what is happening, no reason for such a sharp decline.

Clean up heavy crosslinking and you will see better results.
