will let makers of set-top boxes add Yahoo services such as online radio, photos, music videos and a personalized My Yahoo page to their devices. The Yahoo applications are XML-based, thus able to run on any set-top operating system.

Yahoo's push into set-top boxes highlights the company's desire to expand with the changing face of home entertainment. Cable companies, regional phone companies and consumer-electronics companies are all introducing new products and services based around Internet-enabled living room devices. These features also let people watch on-demand videos, listen to digital music files and view digital photos through television sets.

As many people know, Yahoo's CEO, Terry Semel, comes from a Hollywood background, with all the secret handshakes that go with it. Visit the Yahoo main page and you'll likely see entertainment media advertising.

This looks like a good fit for a company that has successfully cultivated the entertainment media companies. No other search engine or portal has such a good relationship them, probably not even AOL/TimeWarner (or whatever they're named this week).

Gotta give it to Y!, they have a more diversified revenue source than Google. If one doesn't work, the other one will pick up the slack.
