Just wondering... given that Yahoo takes into account the popularity of the base domain, wouldn't a well optimized geocities or similar hosted page rank fairly well? In playing with keywords I found one that ranked well for a competitive term and at first couldn't decide why... then I thought... Backlinks to base domain are about 1.7 million. What am I missing here?

Aside from free hosts like geocities there's also those pseudo domains like widgets.eu.com or widgets.uk.com ...

I'm sure Y! have appropriate filters in place.

I had a long time good running site at geocities.com and it gots some decent popularity from the domain as also a lot of other sites relating my topic are arround there. This gave it some kind of authority domain about the topic e.g. in Google.

BTW: Geocities is part of Yahoo and therefor I do not think they will filter it. :-)

I found this exact example this morning. A site with no content, no links, no pagerank with the text :

" my homepage is under construction " Ranking in the top 10 for very competitive keyword.

The proof is in the pudding.
