I thought in the past when I searched with quotes in Y! it would only show exact matches. Now I am getting the same results with or without quotes for some searches. Its difficult to prove because I am also seeing different results for other searches. Specifically, if you pick a city name and add about before it and then search with and without quotes, you get the same results.
about new york
"about new york"
if so, how do we do a search that will include common words that are typically ignored?

The top rankings do not appear to change, but the total number of search results do change dramatically for me.

This is because "about" is treated as a stopword both within and without quotes. A better behaviour would be that "about" isnt a stopword within quotes. We have been notified of this before but unfortunately improvements do not happen overnight. We are constantly improving the service so check back soon.

Thanks for the reply Tim. Does that apply to all stop words or is it "about" specific? Nevermind, i guess that would be easy enough to check.

It is not restricted to "about" specifically but a behaviour that is in effect for a group of stopwords.
