Yahoo's Most Popular Listings

What's the scoop?

Okay... how do you get into Yahoo's Most Popular (top ten) listings for a keyword? More importantly how do you stay there? We were on this list for the keyword lingerie <it was lovely> but in the past few weeks fell off this list and since we don't know how we got on it, we certainly don't know how we fell out of their graces. Does anyone know what the story is on this?

Thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill,

I think it's a combination of several factors, but as of yet I'm not sure because I still see several inconsistencies.
Personally, I think it's a combination of clickthrough popularity and editor's pick.
There's some highly popular sites listed as "Most Popular" in the categories I monitor, but at the same time there are some sites that just don't belong there. So it seems to be a combination of both.

Any body else have any ideas?

<pinch> Come on you guys! Either no one knows anything about how you get on Yahoos! fave list or you're not about to tell. ;) Can't say I'd blame you. Does anyone have ANY ideas, I'd really like to get back on that list!!!

I would have to agree with 2_much's reply from what I know.

to summarise

only Yahoo's editors really know what it takes

the best the rest of us can manage is knowing how to be sure to be considered...and maybe how to pressure Yahoo to include high profile sites

Hmmm... our site sells lingerie. It's a very competitive field and should bring in a lot of search traffic to Yahoo! I assume they count popularity by the amount of times that term is searched for and your site comes up and they click through, right?

Looks like this placement on their fave list is a combination of this and a random editor placing it. The problem with Yahoo! (among other things) is how do you increase your traffic TO them - or am I totally off base here?

I noticed a shift on the Most Popular listings in some of the categories I monitor.
The correlation between the sites that come up on the Serp's for a keyword search and the Most Popular sites seems to have increased. Whereas before they seemed to be two separate "algos", there are now more sites in common between them. It seems that if you're able to appear in the SERP, then you will then be listed as "Most Popular".
Has anyone else noticed this? Or is this just for a few keywords?

The "most popular" sites in my area of interest on Yahoo are:

1. a site that says "is not maintained anymore..." at the top of every page

2. a site that says "NOTICE: This web page has been moved to "

3. a site that says "What's New - Nov 22, 2000"

4. a site that's almost brand new, devoid of content except for some that was lifted from usenet, and has obviously bought its way into the listing

and

5. a site that actually works, is useful, and has been around long enough to be popular.

In other words, Yahoo is rot. Their "most popular" sites are a combination of what some editor thought was cool 2 years ago and who has paid to be listed since then. Nothing more.

(yes, I'm bitter)

Hi Dalguard, welcome to WmW!

On some categories, the most popular listings are pretty "off" (as in yours). However, the "Most Popular" listings in some of the categories that I monitor are pretty accurate.

If it's any consolation, I have a few sites listed "Most Popular" and the increase in traffic is not significant.

p.s. I checked out the site in your profile - great site! Trad is hardcore. Have you been to Taquitz (close to Jtree)? It's got some great climbs. Williamson's got a few decent climbs - if you ever feel like sports climbing.

Jill,

Well I am not a pro, but I would like to add few things.

1. Yahoo ranks web sites based on few important factors.
...a.) Title [Editied by Editor - Generally official company Name]
...b.) Description [blah..blah.....- same as above]
...c.) Click popularity.
...d.) Editor's Pick
...e.) In later days, combination of all of above.

2. Lets say you have a web site.
...Title = My *Main Key phrase* Store
...Description = Specialising in *second main key phrase* and *third key phrase* with blah blah and blah.

3. Suppose it is a new web site.
... Got some friends?
..... Ask them to click on your web site from "What New Page" on the day your web sites appears in the "What's New" [generally the day after you receive an email of success]
..... Hopefully all are not living in the same house, so they will have different IP#.
..... Make sure that you tell them that once they click on your web site, they DON'T visit Yahoo for next good 20 - 30 minutes.
..... Hey make sure they repeat the process couple of times with few hour interval.

4. On the fourth day after email of success, your web site will be in Yahoo directory [not in search].

5. Ask your friends to search for *your key phrase* and when the result pages shows up, DON't click on ANY website. Ask them to dig out the category [from the search result page] where your web site is, and ask them to find your web site and click on it - and don't visit Yahoo for next 20 - 30 minutes. And if they do visit Yahoo, then request them not to use search results.

6. Most important point. Make sure that visitors *STAY* on your web site. For example suppose, someone typed in "your key phrase" and your web site was #1, they went to your web sites and in very less time, if they hit "back" button on their brower to visit Yahoo - well my dear friend - that is not a good sign. Offer your visitors good amount of content that they will spend atleast few minutes before they leave your web site.

7. Generally a new web site will not be found on the top of the result page - where there is good competition. The more clicks your web site gets, you will notice that your web site will get better ranking. And in the same manner, if the top ranked web sites, does not gets good clicks, that it will loose its ranking *very fast*

8. Most popular sites, are the sites that surfers actually spend lot of time. And generally don't return from those web sites for long time. Cuz, if they do return and do the same search - than it is easy for Yahoo to understand that "The respective ranked" website didn't deliver good content to surfer to didn't satisfied surfers needs. Well Yahoo wants to fullfill surfers needs so that more and more people will use Yahoo - after all it is money, right?

9. "Most Popular" - well I am not yet there, and am working on it - but well you never know - good work always gives good results, right?

Well see you at "Most Popular Sites" soon!

P.S.....I am very poor at English and am too sleepy to proof read. Please ignore any errors you might see. Thanks

Vishal:

Thanks for your input! My site is not new, however, we've been around since about 1996. I can get traffic to my web site it's traffic that buys that I'm looking for. When we were on the Yahoo most popular we didn't get a LOT more traffic but the traffic that did come converted nicely. I'll keep all these things in mind as I work on getting back on that list.

I personally don't agree that just becuase a site is in the "Most Popular" list you will get targated client base. However, is a site appers ranked good at search result page than you can expect good amount of people coming to your web sites and spending money.

My ratio of web surfer's visit from Search Results:Directory listing is about 15:1.
