I have noticed only recently that Yahoo appears to be bumping down commercial sites from high listings and perhaps handing over top positions to some directory listed web pages. If anyone else has observed this please speak your mind on it, I would love to hear about it. Yahoo has become a little headache recently!

A diehard fan of unbiased Google.

Highhanded, incompetant, arrogant, self-interested - Yes! IMO

Biased towards directory litings? NO. I think not.

Maybe its just whats left after the carnage that the Yahoo! "engineers" ha-ha, leave with their over zealous SERPs editing.

The idea to rid the SERPS of Spam was (is) couragous. The methods suspect and the result is a "poorer" index.

They are shooting themselves in the foot and have not realised it yet! -they will, they need some changes to the guidlines to their editorial team and they need it now.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant. It is what I feel.

Y! has everything a user would need, no? From real estate to cars to soccer balls on Y! Shopping so there's a real conflict of interest, unlike Google where search is their bread and butter. Is not far fetched to think that what you said is true. Not the typed memo thing, but a wink and a nod...

This is true in the SERPs I'm looking at. Prominence is given to sites that are simply listings of the sites in the category.

One good thing though -- Yahoo has cleaned up its SERPs and all the trashy and spammy sites I've complained about are all gone. At least in the SERPs I'm looking at.

I've seen a few serp's where sites in the directory seem to get a few extra points in the SERP's. However, a disadvantage is that directory titles and descriptions are hand picked by the editors, so they may in fact hurt rankings. So it's relative to the title/description of sites, and the algo running for particular words/categories.

"Highhanded, incompetant, arrogant, self-interested - Yes! IMO"

I second the motion.

I know in Real Estate Y! has done a wonderful butchering job on the serps.

I have beat my head against the wall since March and made no progress at all in getting my two national sites back in.

I think Y is turning in to a company that people will love to hate (especially us webmasters!)
