it truly depends on what your niche is. i have found an listings an enormous benefit for regional businesses - however if you are already well listed in Y! you may want to keep in mind that Y! directory's description will take precedence over your meta description tag.

At this point it is really dependent on your site and where the page would get listed.

The main benefits of a Yahoo directory listing are link popularity in Google, a boost in Yahoo search rankings, and potentially traffic if the category comes up in the SERP's or if the page is listed in Google.

If your budget is limited, you might want to start by paying for your URL to get included first via the URL inclusion program.

No one link should make or break a SERP. But think of it this way - you are getting an authoritative link from a on-topic themed page - and aside from that many categories of Y! Directory do get traffic and bring visitors.

Also it is probable that Y!'s Inktomi Spider uses Y! Directory as a jumping off point...

It really depends - if you are selling 10 cent widgets and are one of 120 million in the 10 cent widget category, you may not see a return on investment.

if you are a hotel in Belgrad and your are the only one in the category, you will probably earn many times your listing fee on a weekly basis.

Its only $300 - can't hurt to try it. Just remember that Inktomi will use your Y! category description from the life of your listing - so spend some time writing a good one.

You say that Yahoo uses my directory description instead of the meta tag description. Is that for every page of my site? I have 1000's of pages each with different meta tags on various related topics. Surely I won't have my Yahoo directory description for every page, that would give irrelevant results and completely lower my clickthroughs.

Just the main page.

Technically, the only the page that is listed in Y! Directory. Small distinction, but some people have deep linked Y! directory listings, that's the only reason I mention it.

So, if I pay $299 to yahoo to get listed in a directory and then, I should then see a dramatic rise in my google page rank? And how much does google page rank really matter?

Probably, if your current page rank is dramatically lower than the PR of the Y cat page.

Probably not, if your current page rank is not dramatically lower than the PR of the Y cat page.

And how much does google page rank really matter?
Many folks here would say it matters less than ever before.

In most cases, PR should not be the primary consideration is buying a Y directory link.

I just checked and it turns out I am already listed in one of their directories, so I guess paying them would be fruitless. Does paying them help for search results ranking?

Not necessarily. But if you list a new site, it might help give your site a boost as an "authoritative" link.

The rules of SEs change all the time, but even G itself recommends getting listed in Y! and DMOZ.

I don't pay for listing every site I own. some of them have been added free. One site has over 20 deeplinked free Y! directory listings, so yeah, I would say in that case, the listings have definitely made a difference. :)

No one link should make or break your site. However, you need to consider the big picture.

In my personal opinion, a new site can be helped a great deal by getting listings in Y! - I have gotten a lot of links from other sites who've used Y! to find my site.

YMMV
