Just wondering if the $200 or so is a worthwile investment for a Yahoo comercial listing?

Im a UK Web Designer. I'm learning SEO - does the Yahoo listing really do anything for Google or is that a myth? And does Yahoo send traffic? I know that will depend on everything about my listing and site etc but whats your experience?

The link helps your PR, but aside from that...

Yahoo no longer rearranges results so that listed web sites appear at the top. (not sure if they ever did, but I thought they did)

relatively few people use the directory to find things, most just use a regular search which returns google results for now, soon to be inktomi results.

This of course, can change based on your target market. In some markets, I bet you will find that a ton of people use the directory.

If the budget is tight, I think the money can be better spent elsewhere.

I paid last year and forgot to cancel before it was just renewed today - ouch. I don't think it has much value at all really - I can get a PR4 link with the link text of my chose for A LOT cheaper!

waste of money. However, it seems reasonable to me that, much like Google uses the DMOZ to seed their crawl, I expect Inktomi to use the Yahoo directory. But, that is just my opinion. I would not bet 300 bucks on it.

Hey kermey, I just sent you a sticky for the proper category specific to your city...and there is a free subscription option.

In my opinion it can be well worth it. First off it helps you get crawled. Second, people do search the yahoo directory on its own.

Also depending on your industry and PPC prices you might be missing out on some nice savings from it...let me explain:

If you could get 10 clicks a day out of the category that is 3650 clicks a year, divide $300 by that, and you come out at 8.2 cents per click, cheaper than Overture.

May be worth waiting to see how/if the directory is integrated into the results once they drop G.

It really does depend on the category.

Most of my sites would be placed in a PR 2 category with 50 to 100 others.....worth squat for PR, worth squat for traffic.....just not worth it.

However the brand new site I'm currently working on will fit nicely into a PR6 category with only 6 others. I figure that is worth a Yahoo directory subscription fee.

At this point in time the traffic from the directory is still going to be minimal, but the PR6 link from them should be worth it, and who knows what weighting the next Yahoo search (Ink Based) may add to directory listings.

I bought a Yahoo listing for one of my older sites just before they went to annual subscriptions, and in my experience I wouldn't bother with it. $299 per annum is a lot to ask when you'll get as much traffic, if not more, from lesser known but more targeted directories.

Your $299 would also go a long way in a PPC campaign, or adding new custom features to your site etc etc.

I'd wait until the Inktomi/Overture inclusion is fully transparent. They might go into a different diretion with their business model afterall and you could easily throw 300 bucks out the window.

It should be visible pretty soon IMHO, so I would not bother for now.
