Yahoo previously reset your email preferences [webmasterworld.com]. Now it sounds like they are getting ready to email advertise everyone in earnest.

My understanding from friends w/Yahoo accounts was that you could opt-out completely again - it's just ridiculous that they have to "start over".

This is so telling of Yahoo and their attitude toward thier users. They are notorious for changing the rules in the middle of the game.

To put things in perspective, it took me about one whole minute to reset my prefernces to NO for everything.

This certainly is not my first experience with companies changing their TOS "...in the middle of the game." so-to-speak.

Even so, I can't fault Yahoo!, or any other merchant (whose free service I use), for trying to squeeze more money out of that service.

There! All changed to "No!" in the time it took to write this post. Dontcha just love multitasking, Mohamed_E? ;)

Opting out was no big deal. However, my guess is that many users won't opt out, or won't be able to. Possible reasons:
- forgotten username/password
- multiple usernames
- don't get or delete Yahoo notice
- general confusion

I got the "starting January" notification, and I double checked my preferences - and they were still set on "NO!" just as they have been since Y! introduced the "marketing preferences" opt out.

I agree that it was crummy of them to force everyone to opt out, but this is just a "last chance" heads up as far as I can tell.

yeah, it was a no-biggie, no-brainer. I took the message as being your basic:
Hi, remember when we said we were going to make changes? Well, we dinna get to it, but now we will, so decide what you wanna do now if you haven't already.

by the by, it took a tad longer to type the above than it did to complete the opt out process. As I said, no-biggie, no-brainer and a non-starter of an issue forme.
