Is the directory what gives them the extra push? Is the $300 worth paying just for an extra step up in the SERPs?
(Their descriptions in the directory are horrible. Definately not Zeal worthy at all, and No keywords in the title or description of the listing either.)
Has anybody real traffic from yahoo?
I manage a number of sites that do well out of Yahoo. In all instances, this is because Yahoo uses Google's results to backfill. None of them have paid Yahoo directory entries.
Yahoo has recently been on a buying spree, though (Overture and Inktomi spring to mind), so this may change. Luckily Inktomi also likes most of the sites I am talking about.
My experience is different .. the sites I run which have entries in Yahoo directory do not generate much traffic and I have found them quite difficult to deal with on a number of issues.
I expect as a paying customer a better service in setting up what we want .. as to results thats their affair but determines how much I recommend a listing to my clients.
However my primary reason for getting a directory listing in the last years has been for the google effect of the link rather than the direct traffic.
Most traffic had traced back to search results not resulting (more than indirectly) from their directory listings.
Hope this does not confuse the issue too much for you.
At least they certainly used to.
The trouble I find is that I work for lots of niche industrial clients many of whom only target UK clients.
Yahoo UK directory pages typically in the lower levels have very low PR compared to the .com equivalents so it makes it harder to justify.
For commercial clients, (profitable businesses), the UK listing is a one time only fee - if they cant afford that I dont think I should be considering them as viable clients.
Submit via the UK to the appropriate .com category if you are a UK site ;)
My Yahoo referrals have gone up noticeably since I was added to the directory, so I must be showing up higher in Yahoo searches. (That was certainly true years and years ago when a different site of mine was in the directory.)
But as for the PageRank issue, I don't really know.
if you want to be in Yahoo, then do it. Just don't do it for a damn link, you don't need it. I was number 1 on G for 18 months for the 32nd most searched for term on the Internet(including adult terms), with no listing in Yahoo! trust me, you don't want to waste 300 bucks for a link, just get others...
do things for the right reason, not just for 1 stupid link.
The directory traffic is minimal, and the PR is a gamble at best: most categories are lowish PR and share it amongst many.
IMHO there are much better investments for that $300.
My site would be listed in a category that has PR5 and 68 listed sites. Is it worth the money?
What exactly else could I do with the $300 that would be a better investment?
Would getting listed with Yahoo first help me get listed at DMOZ?
Would getting listed with Yahoo first help me get listed at DMOZ?
It will neither help nor hinder. ODP editors are instructed to ignore considerations such as a site's listings in other general purpose directories or its search engine positions, or an outside party's display/ranking/treatment of ODP data (such as the Google Directory).
