how did yahoo used to operate?

before yahoo introduced there paid editor approvale service how did i get listed? ive got a competitor who is listed in three different areas of the directory on three different country specific versions! are these the same directory and has he had to pay to get in here, his website is atleast two years old! any help appreciated!

With Yahoo there's often been a Free submitting button :)

This could be used by non-commercial sites, organisations etc, i think it's still there, haven't looked for a while, they often removed it in popular categories, but it was good for them if they wanted to fill up a category with more sites.

The initial entry in Yahoo could have been done by free submission, by paying (in the last 3 years) or by being selected by an editor surfing the net.

As for the country version of Yahoo - I think you asked the same question in [webmasterworld.com...]

I will repeat the answer. An entry in ANY English language Yahoo directory will show up in ALL English language directories where the Yahoo directory has a country version.
