The main page was listed in the Business and Economy category in February (for free) and I'm hesitant to submit this page if it will jeopardize the free listings.
Any experiences?
I have had the fortune of doing this very successfully.
1. Make sure the deeplink is not represented by the mainpage. This doesn't mean no link from the main page - more to the topic focus is not that apparent.
2. The physical deeplink is quite original, a different perspective from other sites within the same catagory. Remember that DMOZ is mostly "research", non-commercial may indeed be a factor but it is not the primary focus. Therefore, if blue widgets is represented by another site (mainpage) or many sites, your near carbon-copy ins't going to fly.
3. Dynamic, interactive content - JavaScript, Flash, Shockwave etc. are big sellers when it comes to deeplinks. Text and imagery of Mars on twenty sites is the same thing and another site of this similar design really doesn't add value to DMOZ users.
A applet that can allow the user to interact with your information to appreciate vary aspects, positions, perspectives, and/or enhance their research of the topic - are a sure winner.
Less cryptically, Yahoo does have tons of deeplinks, and it does list them. It just doesn't list many. Submit a good one every month or so and hope you get lucky. I doubt you'll jeopardize anything. Submit a jillion, and yes you could put existing listings in jeopardy.
Then follow that process but don't, under any circumstances work on the basis that if you throw enough poo to the wall, some of it will stick ... it won't, as it slides down, it clings to the remainder and it all falls down!
What a pleasant way of putting it!
