Yahoo's been getting really comfy with Overture for a while now. The Overture directory listings have been really accented of late and with Overture's purchase of AV, Yahoo's in a position to unload its entire in-house search functions.
Another prediction I have made recently is that we'll see Overture try a brand new concept - Pay for "Depth of Crawl" rather than pay for inclusion. I have nothing to back that one up, though - it's just a feeling I have.
My predictions have been pretty good, though. Here's a prediction [webmasterworld.com] from back in July of last year. The prediction in message 3 of the thread has already come to pass. The prediction in the last message of the thread is still on the table and this Overture/AV deal looks like it's gearing up for passage.

There is no way Yahoo will continue to outsource editorial search after spending over 200 mil on Ink. A year from now, you won't see any signs of Google, and you certainly won't see AV.
Grumpus, I think you're in left field on this one. :)
Inktomi already sold (before the yahoo purchase...) their enterprise search product.
Now why would Yahoo buy them, if that was the direction they were headed...?
Though it is an interesting idea if Yahoo buys Overture...I'm sure it would gall MSN to have so much of their money from search related revenue also benefiting their main portal rival...as it stands now, since Inktomi is still there, Yahoo is already reaping a reward of sorts from MSN. :)
Since Yahoo owns Ink, then they really aren't outsourcing, as they'd be paying themselves. Thus, makes sense to use Ink.
This guy thinks that Yahoo listings will be listed in Ink. Fully spidered and above Google/other Ink results in the Yahoo SERPS. Could make sense, $299/year would be very good value to get your site listed in Inktomi and Yahoo, but would they FULLY spider the site for this price?
What signs? Between spending 200 million dollars on Ink and hiring one of overture's executives, I'd say the signs show not only that Yahoo is dedicated to search but they eventually want it all done in house.
Just smells like Yahoo is wanting to take things in-house and stop the outsourcing. Heck, they are making great money through their partnership with Overture and only getting a percentage, now, with the purchase of INK, they have the platform to take that in-house as well..cutting OV out of the picture entirely and taking all the profits.
That's what I'd been seeing all along, now, with the recent announcement of the AV purchase by Overture, it seems even more likely. Almost as if Overture is getting ready for the boot.
but either way the other thing displaying inktomi results will do is strengthen the current inktomi submission business XX times.
think about it people are paying to have ink inclusion for MSN ... what happens when it is for MSN and YAHOO?
As far as the originating question ... do sites need to be redesigned? My personal opinion is no if your site ranks well at google odds are pretty good it will rank well at inktomi.
The reverse situation a site ranking well at inktomi is less likely to have great rankings at google due to the whole PR concept and linking sites.
I don't see Overture lasting the year at Yahoo....
Yahoo users are "Very" loyal, and will be more likely to click a "Yahoo" sponsored link, than an Overture one. I think that will offset the bid amounts, until bids ramp up to Overture levels in Yahoo's PPC Engine.
Unless Yahoo buys Verity, Grumpus is going to be on that "ride" alone.... :)
Inktomi themselves disposed of their Enterprise search, to concentrate solely on Web Search. I agree with those that said Yahoo will be "totally" in house this year.
Over/AV will give them a run...
MSN dumps Inktomi and buys FAST....
AOL and Google stay friendly, until Google IPO's, goes for Portal (as much as many here hate to see that happen), and tries to take on the other (4) as a Portal.
of your 3 predicts, agree, disagree, and interested as hell
MSN / Inktomi
Would tend to agree something like this could happen, but if I were Yahoo, I would do everything I could to keep MSN, to support the ink inclusion model.
Over/AV giving them a run?
AV results are worse than inktomi, and from my perspective you can get away with inferior results if you have the visitor captured through other means ie; email, games, messenger, sports tickers, fantasy games etc like yahoo does ...
AOL dumping Google?
this one will be reaaaallly interesting, on one hand you got AOL talking about google search in their ads, but on the other if google loses yahoo search (which seems likely) and if google were to lose AOL as you say ...
well lets just say you'd have a lot less people spending all their time trying to trade links ;-)
As for AOL, I don't see them breaking ties with Google, even if Google goes the way of the portal. I simply don't think they will see Google as as big of a threat as Yahoo or MSN do whose visitors are often through various other ISPs and not through their own independent network. AOL's subscribers are much more tethered to the AOL network than either Yahoo or MSN.
Teoma is already owned by ASK jeeves...do you think then MSN is going to make a purchase in that direction? :)
Would be interesting, since ASK already has the deal going with Google.
Imho, yep -> Yahoo is going to take it in house.
Why would they ever want to buy Verity, anyway?...that bit still confuses me.
