How do some sites get into the "Most Popular" listing on the top of certain categories? It doesn't seem to be just pagerank as many sites in the list have equal or greater pagerank...

Is it a factor of how many clicks and how long you've been in the dir?

Hey scorpion, I think it's a combination of: 1. editor picks, 2. length of time in the directory 3. clickthrough.

I have a few sites that are most popular and it's pretty inexplicable to me. Also, the most popular category hasn't been updated in a long time for my cat's.

A year or so ago my site sat in that illustrious group. I felt it was a direct result of an article I was running about a certain file caching ISP, that was attracting a couple thousand hits a day for over a month. As soon as the article came down, so did the hits and so did my site - back to the trenches.
