buying domains with imbedded keywords

Do you use "." or "-" or nothing between keywords?

I have read much lately about SE's and the importance of having keywords in the URL. I am considering buying some domains, and I am wondering what the latest, most up-to-date theory is on how to do this.

1. Canonicals / subdomains
ex: www.keyword1.keyword2.com
ex: www.cleaning.service.com

2. Dashes
ex: www.keyword1-keyword2.com
ex: www.cleaning-service.com

3. Nothing
ex: www.keyword1keyword2.com
ex: www.cleaningservice.com

What do you you think helps you rank the highest?

Well the dash is part of the domain name. The third level subdomains you can do on your own box.

.com top level domain
domian.com fully qualified domain name (the one you register)
www.domain.com third level domain name where www is selectable by the host.

So, purchas the dashed domain name for better rankings and then do the third level stuff with your host. Nondashed domains have a higher type in rate, so it warrents consideration that if you buy my-domain.com, that you will be sending traffic to domain.com on people mistyping your domain name.

Thanks Brett. Well the purpose of those domain names would be to rank higher on search engines. So if people are just clicking from the SE's, it does not matter whether or not dashes are included.

I do have a question though, is there a tool out there that will tell me how many times a domain has been typed into a browser? For example, if my site is www.mysite.com I want to know if it is worth it to buy www.my-site.com. I want to know how many people try to go to www.my-site.com ahead of time.

There is no reliable data on it that I have found. There have been figures thrown around from 2% to 5%, but I think it all depends on your site.

It is, however, worth it to keep someone else from taking it and stealing part of your traffic and goodwill.

It appears as though our AWESOME site (hehe) owns www.my-site.com but we were not redirecting traffic to www.mysite.com. Glad I got that fixed. Now for those 1000 word META Keywords tags. Yikes. No wonder we have poor rankings!

I'd like to know one more thing here...
If i am considering canonicals with sub domains..for each theme, i would like to have a separate IP address for each canonical.
Question is where/with whom do i buy the IP addresses from..is it from my host itself..??

Yes, you usually get them from you host. However, outside of USA you will most likely find it very difficult to get additional unique IP's. I found out that it is not only very difficulæt to get them in Europe but they also come much cheaper in the US.
