OK, I've got a .net, needed country specific results(Australia) was hosting offshore, moved hosting to my country, almost immediately got the top position in google.com.au for my site.

But am nowhere when search is restricted to sites within AUstralia.

Makes no sense....

Anyone?

What is the address in the WHOIS data? Does that also say Australia?

If Australia is home to your target audience, then to do consistently well, you need a .au domain name and a 301 from the old domain.

Although google.com.au's default search is "the web", I suspect many Australians would choose "pages from Australia" (depending, of course, on the topic), as it gives such a very different result - in the UK, for example, the difference is not so immediately apparent.
