Getting non-existing pages out of google index

Hello All,
When I search for site:www.domainname.nl in google, I get only one (1) current page (our tld www.domainname.nl) and 29 old, removed pages. When I click the link to include omitted search results I get all current pages, and 33 non-excisting pages.

All these pages are long gone from my server, so why does google insist on them staying in their index? When the non-excisting page is requested the server throws back a 404, stating the webpage you're looking for is no longer there. This is a true 404, not some page that acts like one.

I don't understand why these pages are still in the index, and I don't seem to be able to find any way to get them removed. Any pointers on this issue are welcome!

If those old urls say "Supplemental Result" then there's little you can do but wait for Google to flush them out on their own schedule. Also, be sure that the http server header does say "404" or "410" for those urls. If you have a "custom 404" page that really returns a "200 OK" header, then you will need to fix it.

If your new urls are all appearing under "omitted results" then I would check to be sure they each have a unique title and meta description tag -- each one specific to the content of the page, rather than generic and applicable to the entire site.
