Can you think of any possible reason for this - anything YOU may have done?

How do you know this? How do you know it has not indexed your site? Some people have reported that no indexing has occured for the first several months a site has existed due to some inherent initial delay in the way Google works.

Try searching in Google for some phrase that only appears in your web site (enclosed it in double quotes in the search). Does your site appear?

Are you a .com or other site that does not end in .uk and have opted in Google to search in the UK only? If so, you may never appear.

Lastly, try registering with [google.co.uk...]

Google allows you to build a sitemap for your site and upload it to Google to ensure all pages are indexed and kept up-to-date. This helped me get registered. It will tell you after a week or so what has been indexed.

The first thing you need to do is check whether the domain was pre-owned here [archive.org]

The site:www.domain.com search only shows www pages that are indexed.

You need to try site:domain.com too.

i tried both www & non-www. Nothing comes up. How long does it usually take to get indexed after seeing googlebot crawled?

It often seems to take around 3 successive (and succesful) crawls of a page for the first listing. I would make very sure that the server is not slow in responding -- I'm pretty sure I've seen a site's indexing get delayed by intermittent server troubles.

Also, with the new Google crawling and indexing patterns (if we dare call them patterns) a new site with only limited IBLs may have a struggle for a while.
