Taking care of 301's on-the-fly

Let's say I submit a sitemap with the URLs that are going to be redirected (301) to the new/correct URLs. Would this be a good idea since I have another sitemap with the correct URLs?

All pages are indexed. Old (which I wish to remove from the index by using 301) and new.

I don't think it's a good idea, though I am certainly not sure it would hurt. You don't want those 301 urls in the index, after all, but only their replacement pages.

I've often observed sites that use lots of 301 redirects can tend to get quite tangled up in Google. They've historically had difficulty handling redirects, both 301 and 302, so I mostly try to minimize redirects of any kind. For one thing, they smack of SEO!

I am assuming that you are talking about a Google sitemap.

Google sitemaps are a tool for webmasters and currently not used when it comes to indexing.

I know someone who submitted a sitemap 3 months ago and still hasn't been indexed
