I've just used the services of a website that will automatically generate a sitemap for your site that you can submit to Google and Yahoo site map service.

The sitemap generated lists my home page as both:

www.xyz.com/
www.xyz.com/index.htm

Is there any reason I should or should not remove the www.xyz.com/ listing from this list since it is redundant?

You do not want two different urls listed if they both lead to the same content. I would take this as a sign to fix any Home Page links that point to "index.html" and make them point to "http://www.example.com/" instead. Definitely do NOT give the crawler both versions through your Sitemap, unless by some chance, they point to different content.

The domain itself is the version I would choose, since that is where many of your inbound links will probably point.
