Ways to use 301 for moving to new domain.

Hi all,

I have an old domain, which it has been decided to re-brand under a new domain name, and my question to all would be how you would go about using the 301 redirect.

Would you:
1.Redirect all pages from the old domain to the root of the new domain

2.Redirect each old domain page individually to there corresponding page on the new domain.

3. Redirect all sub-directories on the old domain to the root of the old domain and then list a “site map” of the new domains pages. ( I know doorway page but its an option)

Which would be the best method of getting all pages indexed, in the shortest time, without incurring any filters/penalties from Google?

I would normally have gone for the second choice but with all the redirect problems G seems to have had, I’m worried that these redirects would appear spammie, and after all there would be thousands of redirects from one site to another.

If the new domain serves an exact copy of the directory and file structure, you can do a domain level 301 -- only the domain changes and the rest of the path stays the same. No need that way for individual page redirects.

I would like to do the same, move an old domain to a new folder of an old domain. I know the procedure, however I'm concerned with "sandbox" type penalties. I think it's a legit issue in these 301 cases. Should I worry? The domain that would be 301d has plenty of backlinks.

Ah Jeez just to throw a spanner in the works this site, that we have just acquired, is on a shared server…and guess what, control panel access isn’t allowed. Any ideas on what I can do to get around this if the host won’t redirect the site from his server to my new branded domain on my server.

Is a Meta refresh with zero delay good enough, is it a sign to the robots that it’s a 301 redirect or am I just going to completely confuse them, and cause a huge problem.

Really need some expert advise here I’ve read other threads that have mentioned shared server problems and 301 redirects but there doesn’t seem to be a concrete conclusion to any of them.

Has any one got any ideas, if I can’t get to the control panel? Which is the best way of redirecting the power and the links to my new brand?

Hi ,

Just had a thought would this work,

I think we have control of the DNS settings if we were to point the DNS to a server we control i.e. I can get to the control panel we could then set the redirects to what we want. Do you think this will work? Ok we’d have to host them for a few months I suppose until we had no or very little traffic on them anyway.

But I can’t think of another way around it, the hosting company isn’t very co-operative.
Any thoughts on this approach.
